Once upon a time there was a very strong hunter who had a hard time
sharing what he was gifted by the Four Legged People. One night
while out on a long hunt, he had a dream. In his dream he died and
had no elbows. He was walking around a great Teepee or Lodge or
Longhouse and saw two long tables set for a banquet. The tables were
set with all the varieties of game and vegetables a person could
want to eat and enough food for everyone. The hunter thought that
the provider of this banquet must be the greatest hunter. Soon
people started to collect around the tables. Around one table, the
people were very thin, so thin that one would think they never had
anything to eat. They pushed and shoved their way to the table. They
sat at the table and just stared at the food. A curtain of hides
fell between the two tables making it impossible for the skinny
people to see who and what was at the other table. The second table
was slowly being occupied by the most wonderful, happy, carefree
people the hunter had ever seen. He also noticed that at both
tables, all the people had NO elbows. He wondered what made the
difference between the two tables. There was a loud resounding
bellow from a Rams horn and the hunter watched as the skinny people
tried to feed themselves. He watched as they struggled with no
elbows. People tried to hold the food with their feet. They tried to
bend over to eat only to have the food roll back on the table
platters in the center of the table. He saw all kinds of ways they
tried to eat, yet no-one ate. He then went to the other table.
Before he arrived around the curtain he heard singing and drumming.
He felt the ground respond to some great Dancing and felt the air
being charged with a love of life. Here he thought he should like to
live the rest of eternity. When he rounded the corner he saw almost
all the food gone, and everyone very stuffed from the feast. Lucky
for him, there were a few people left still eating and he watched as
they were very busy FEEDING EACH OTHER. When the hunter awoke, He
realized he had had a vision. He found a new purpose in life and he
fed all those who could not feed themselves. You see it takes co-
operation of the Metis {as well as All People} to be a satisfied
People here in this life. If we feed each-other, then when we cross
over we will know how to feed and be fed. If we do NOT feed each
other here, we will be at the table of those who starve on the other
side.
